Cheryl Mull  ~ "Waking Ned Devine"

1.  What was the ethical dilemma faced by Ned's friends?  Explain, in your opinion, the situational ethics displayed in the movie and give 5 scenes or situations that best illustrate ethical dilemmas and define situational ethics in each of the 5 scenes. Ned’s friends were faced with the ethnical dilemma, whether they should pretend that Ned was someone else, since Ned won the lottery and I guess he actually died from the tremendous amount of shock of winning!

·        It was wrong for the priest to lie.  He should be the one, especially setting a good ensample.  The priest becomes a partaker of the others morally wrong doing. He joined right in there with signing the contract.

·        Michael portrayed to be Ned.

·        Maggie shouldn’t have of lied about who was the father of her child.  She wanted for Finn to be in the picture, but wasn’t honest about the situation.

·        Ned didn’t get the respect at his own funeral in which he should have of.

·        Michael and Jackie claiming the lotto was wrong ethnically.

2. I found myself booing or cheering for several of the cast...who were the good guys or bad guys in this movie for you?  State three good and 3 bad that emerge in this movie and tell me why this is so (6 total).  The good ones were Jackie, Michael, and Annie.  They had good intentions for the people of the little village.  They were going about it in a fair way and considering the sharing aspect of it.  They took into consideration how poor everyone in the town was.  The bad cast was the priest, Maggie and Lizzie.  Lizzie was bad because she wanted more than he “fair share” of the money.  Maggie didn’t want to be with Finn because he smelt like pigs.  She lied about things.  The priest was another bad one, because he went against what he took a stand for.  He was being dishonest openly.

3.  Was the welfare of the community worth the 'sin' or illegal activity in the movie?  Explain why.  Yes and no (both).  Yes because, the village people were out for survival.  The people were poor and this caused them to stick together with one another in harmony.  No, because it was a dishonest act to cheat, and lie for all of their gain, and it was showing disrespect to the dead one who “really” had one to begin with.
